Overview
The splake is a fertile hybrid between the lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) and the brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), created by fisheries managers to combine the best qualities of both parent species. The name is a portmanteau of "speckled trout" (a regional name for brook trout) and "lake trout," and while natural hybridization occasionally occurs where the two species overlap, virtually all splake in North American waters are the product of deliberate hatchery propagation. By crossing a female lake trout with a male brook trout, hatcheries produce a fish that grows faster and larger than a brook trout, matures earlier than a lake trout, and tolerates the marginal conditions of small, cold ponds where neither parent thrives on its own.
Splake occupy an unusual niche in fisheries management because they are a management tool as much as a gamefish. Unlike most hybrids, splake are not sterile, but their reproduction in the wild is negligible, which gives managers precise control over population density through stocking rates. This makes them ideal for waters where a self-sustaining native fishery is impossible to maintain: acidified Adirondack ponds, reclaimed lakes recovering from invasive species, and cold headwater reservoirs that would otherwise support only stunted panfish. New York's Department of Environmental Conservation has been the most aggressive proponent of splake in the eastern United States, and the fish is a signature species of the Adirondack pond program.
For anglers, the splake offers the aggressive, willing-to-strike temperament of the brook trout combined with the growth potential and deep-water habits of the lake trout. Stillwater Reservoir in New York's western Adirondacks is DEC's flagship splake water, stocked by aircraft into remote sections and producing fish that regularly exceed 20 inches. The splake fights hard, takes both flies and lures readily, and provides a reliable coldwater fishery in places where wild trout cannot persist. It is one of the great success stories of applied fisheries science in the Northeast.
Identification
Splake are intermediate in appearance between their two parent species, and telling them apart from a pure brook trout or lake trout requires attention to several features. The most reliable field mark is the tail: brook trout have a nearly square ("squaretail") caudal fin, lake trout have a deeply forked tail, and splake show an intermediate, moderately forked tail. This partial fork is the single most useful character for distinguishing a splake from a brook trout in hand.
The body coloration and markings also blend both parents. Splake typically display the wormlike vermiculation (squiggly dark markings) on the back and dorsal fin that is characteristic of brook trout, but the pattern is often fainter and combined with the pale, irregular spots of a lake trout along the flanks. The lower fins frequently show the white leading edge over a darker stripe that brook trout are known for, though it may be less vivid. Overall the fish tends to be more silvery and less intensely colored than a brook trout, especially in deep, cold lake environments.
Because splake are hybrids, individual fish vary considerably depending on the genetic contribution of each parent and the water they inhabit, so no single mark is definitive on its own. The combination of a moderately forked tail, brook-trout-style vermiculation on the back, and pale flank spots reliably identifies a splake. Where splake are stocked alongside both parent species, close examination of the tail fork and spotting pattern is the best way to confirm identification.
Diet
Splake are opportunistic, aggressive feeders that draw their feeding behavior from both parent species. As juveniles and in smaller waters, they feed heavily on aquatic invertebrates, closely resembling brook trout in their willingness to take mayfly nymphs, caddisfly larvae, midge pupae, scuds, and aquatic beetles. This invertebrate feeding makes young and mid-sized splake highly responsive to nymphs and wet flies, and it is one of the reasons they can be established in small ponds where the primary food base is insects rather than forage fish.
As splake grow, they inherit the lake trout's tendency toward piscivory and become increasingly focused on baitfish. In waters that hold rainbow smelt, yellow perch, sculpins, or minnows, larger splake shift their diet substantially toward fish, and this transition drives the rapid growth that separates trophy splake from ordinary ones. In Stillwater Reservoir and similar Adirondack waters, smelt and small perch are the primary forage that allows splake to reach and exceed 20 inches. Streamers and baitfish imitations become the most productive flies for these larger, fish-eating individuals.
Splake also feed readily on terrestrial insects that fall onto the surface during the warm months, and in productive ponds they will take advantage of seasonal abundances such as flying ant falls, beetle drops, and emerging chironomids. Their broad, flexible diet is precisely what makes them so adaptable to marginal waters: a splake will eat whatever the pond offers, from a size 18 midge pupa to a four-inch smelt, and this dietary versatility is a large part of why the hybrid succeeds where its parents cannot.
Habitat Preferences
Splake thrive in cold, deep, well-oxygenated lakes and ponds, and their temperature preferences fall between those of their two parent species. They prefer water in the 48 to 58 degree Fahrenheit range and will seek out the cold hypolimnion of stratified lakes during summer, following the thermocline much as lake trout do. However, splake tolerate the smaller, shallower, and more acidic waters that lake trout cannot use, which is exactly why they are so valuable for stocking remote ponds. Their brook trout heritage gives them a tolerance for lower pH and marginal water chemistry.
The splake's ideal habitat is the reclaimed or naturally fishless Adirondack pond: cold, moderately deep, with limited natural reproduction of competing species and a food base of invertebrates and small forage fish. In New York, waters like Stillwater Reservoir, Limekiln Lake, and dozens of backcountry ponds are managed specifically for splake because they offer the coldwater conditions the hybrid needs without the size or connectivity that would allow a self-sustaining fishery of another species. Splake also do well in cold reservoirs and deep kettle lakes across the northern tier of the country.
Because splake reproduce so poorly in the wild, their presence in any water is almost entirely a function of stocking, and their distribution reflects management decisions rather than natural range. During spring and fall, when surface waters are cold, splake cruise the shallows and can be caught near shore and around tributary mouths. As summer stratification sets in, they retreat to deeper, colder water and are pursued with sinking lines or by trolling. In winter, splake are a popular target for ice anglers, who find them active and willing to feed beneath the ice throughout the coldest months.
Fishing Tactics
Splake are among the most cooperative coldwater gamefish, and the tactics for catching them shift with the seasons as the fish follow cold water. During spring, shortly after ice-out, and again in fall, splake cruise the shallows and shoreline drop-offs where the water is cold and the food is concentrated. This is prime time for fly anglers: cast streamers such as the Gray Ghost, Black-Nosed Dace, and Woolly Buggers along shoreline structure and near tributary mouths, or fish weighted nymphs and small streamers on a slow retrieve. Splake strike aggressively and fight with the strong, dogged runs of their lake trout parentage.
As summer stratification develops and splake retreat to deep, cold water, the approach shifts to sinking lines, full-sinking heads, or conventional trolling to reach fish holding along the thermocline. Fly anglers willing to fish deep can score with heavily weighted streamers and long countdowns, but many anglers switch to trolling smelt-imitating spoons and streamers on lead-core or downrigger setups to cover water at depth. Locating the thermocline and the forage it concentrates is the key to summer success. Stillwater Reservoir and other large splake waters fish best in the low-light hours of early morning and evening.
Winter is a productive and popular season for splake, and ice anglers take them consistently through the hardwater months. Beneath the ice, splake remain active and will take small jigs tipped with bait, jigging spoons, and imitations of smelt and minnows fished near bottom or at the depth where forage is holding. Regardless of season, splake respond to movement and flash, so an active presentation with erratic retrieves or jigging cadences generally outproduces a static offering. Their reliable willingness to feed year-round is a large part of what makes the splake such a rewarding fish to pursue.
Conservation
Splake carry no conservation status of their own because they are a hatchery-produced hybrid rather than a wild species, and they are not capable of establishing self-sustaining populations of conservation concern. Their management is entirely a matter of stocking policy, with fisheries agencies controlling numbers, sizes, and distribution through the volume and location of hatchery plants. This makes splake an unusually controllable and low-risk stocking option, since a population can be reduced or eliminated simply by ceasing to stock. The splake's true conservation value lies in its use as a management tool that reduces pressure on wild native fisheries. By providing quality angling in reclaimed ponds and marginal coldwater lakes, splake give anglers a satisfying alternative to fishing sensitive wild brook trout populations. In the Adirondacks, the splake program allows New York to offer high-catch-rate trophy fishing in accessible waters while protecting the region's remnant heritage-strain brook trout ponds, which are managed under far more restrictive regulations. Because splake do not reproduce meaningfully in the wild, there is little risk that they will spread beyond stocked waters or hybridize destructively with wild populations, a concern that limits the use of many other non-native fish. Managers do monitor stocked waters to ensure splake are not competing with or displacing valued native species, and stocking is generally confined to waters where a native fishery is already absent or impossible to maintain. This careful, science-driven approach has made the splake a model of responsible put-grow-and-take fisheries management.
