Second Connecticut Lake

Second Connecticut Lake is the higher, wilder sister of Pittsburg's Connecticut Lakes chain, 1,102 mesotrophic acres holding landlocked salmon, lake trout, and a wild brook trout component. Its dam outflow launches the famous fly-fishing-only headwater of the Connecticut River.

Overview

Second Connecticut Lake sits near the top of New Hampshire, 1,102 acres of cold northern water in the town of Pittsburg, hard against the Canadian border in Coos County's Great North Woods. It is the second link in the Connecticut Lakes chain, perched at 1,866 feet — higher, smaller, and noticeably wilder than First Connecticut Lake downstream. The shoreline is spruce-fir forest with almost no development, moose outnumber anglers on many mornings, and the lake carries the unpolished character that draws people to Pittsburg in the first place.

The fishery is pure North Country coldwater: landlocked Atlantic salmon, lake trout, and eastern brook trout, with burbot prowling the bottom. New Hampshire Fish and Game manages Second Connecticut as a stocked lake trout and/or salmon lake, with the salmon program carrying the marquee fishery. What distinguishes this lake from its bigger neighbor, though, is the brook trout component — a portion of the population is wild, holding near the cold inlets and adding a native dimension that First Lake cannot match.

Second Connecticut is also a different kind of water biologically. Where First Lake is a deep oligotrophic basin, Second is mesotrophic — richer and more productive, with an average depth of just 20 feet and a maximum of 63. That shallower, more fertile profile grows better insect life, and fly anglers here get genuine chironomid and mayfly fishing over the shallows in addition to the streamer game. For a floating-line stillwater angler, it is arguably the most interesting lake in the chain.

The classic program starts at ice-out, which comes late at this elevation — often well into May. Salmon chase baitfish along the shorelines and off the inlets, and casting or trolling streamers through the top of the water column produces the best fish of the year. That window stretches through early summer here longer than on lower lakes, and when it closes, the shallows keep producing on midge pupae and mayfly patterns while brook trout stack near the coldwater inlets.

Just as important as the lake itself is what leaves it: the dam at the outlet launches the fly-fishing-only section of the Connecticut River that tumbles down to First Connecticut Lake, one of New England's blue-ribbon trout reaches. Many anglers treat Second Connecticut as base camp — mornings on the river, evenings on the lake — and the combination makes Pittsburg's upper chain one of the finest fly-fishing destinations in the East.

Water Characteristics

Second Connecticut Lake is a natural mesotrophic lake, and that trophic status is the key to understanding it. With 1,102 surface acres averaging only 20 feet deep and bottoming out at 63, it is a far shallower, more fertile basin than the deep oligotrophic troughs of First Connecticut Lake and Lake Francis below it. The NHFG depth chart shows broad shallow flats and gradual contours rather than plunging drop-offs, with the deeper water concentrated in a limited portion of the basin — structure a fly angler can actually cover.

Productivity shows up in the food web. The lake supports better insect life than its downstream neighbors, with chironomids and mayflies active over the shallows through the warm months, alongside the baitfish that sustain the salmon and lake trout. Cold inlet streams feed the lake and create thermal refuges where wild brook trout concentrate once the surface warms.

At 1,866 feet of elevation this is genuinely cold water: ice lingers late, the fishable surface season starts and ends later than lakes to the south, and even in midsummer the mornings run cool. Weather sweeps through the border country fast, and an open 1,100-acre lake can build a chop quickly.

Seasonal Fishing Guide

Spring

Ice-out arrives late at this elevation, often well into May, and it opens the best fishing of the year. Cast or troll traditional baitfish streamers on intermediate and sinking lines along shorelines, points, and inlet mouths for salmon riding high in the cold water. Wild brook trout are shallow and aggressive everywhere before the lake warms.

Summer

The streamer bite for salmon holds into early summer here longer than on lower lakes. As surface temperatures climb, shift to the mesotrophic shallows: chironomid pupae under an indicator in the mornings and mayfly patterns on the flats in the evenings. Brook trout concentrate at the cold inlets — fish small streamers and soft-hackles off the inlet mouths.

Fall

Cooling water in September pulls salmon and lake trout back toward the shorelines and inlets. Streamer fishing improves through the fall, and the wild brookies color up and feed hard ahead of spawning. Check current season closing dates for trout and salmon before a late trip, and pack for genuine North Country cold.

Winter

The lake locks up early and stays frozen long at 1,866 feet in the Great North Woods. Open-water fly fishing is finished; confirm winter season rules and dates in the NH Freshwater Fishing Digest before any hardwater plans.

Access & Boats

Public access is via a concrete boat ramp with gravel parking off US Route 3, which runs along the lake on its way to the Canadian border. This is remote country — Pittsburg village and its services are a long drive south, so arrive fueled and provisioned. A boat or canoe opens up the whole lake, and the modest average depth makes it friendlier canoe and float-tube water than the big lakes downstream, though wind deserves respect. The dam at the outlet is a key landmark: the fly-fishing-only section of the Connecticut River begins there and runs down to First Connecticut Lake, and many anglers split their days between lake and river.

Ice Fishing

Fishing Pressure & Local Tips

Light. Second Connecticut sits at the far end of one of the longest dead-end drives in New England, and most of the traffic that does make it to Pittsburg concentrates on the famous river sections and on First Connecticut Lake. The lake sees trolling effort around ice-out and holiday weekends, but fly-specific pressure is minimal, and on a weekday morning an angler working the inlets or the shallows will usually have the water essentially alone. The trailheads and river pools below the dam absorb most of the crowds.

Local Knowledge

Time the trip late. Ice-out at 1,866 feet lags the rest of the state, and the salmon streamer window here runs from ice-out well into early summer — later than lower-elevation lakes. Work streamers on sinking or intermediate lines along shorelines and off the inlets, and keep the fly moving; salmon respond to a stripped fly with pace.

Do not treat this as only a streamer lake. The mesotrophic shallows are the most productive insect water in the Connecticut Lakes chain: fish chironomid pupae under an indicator over the flats in the mornings, and watch for mayfly activity on the shallows through summer evenings. When the surface warms, find the cold inlets — the wild brook trout will be there, and a small streamer or soft-hackle swung off an inlet mouth is the highest-percentage brookie play on the lake.

Use the lake-and-river combination. The fly-only Connecticut River below the dam fishes best in the same season the lake does, so structure days around river sessions at prime light and lake sessions in between. Camping and lodging in Pittsburg put both within minutes.

The brook trout is widely considered the most beautiful freshwater fish in North America, and catching one in a pristine Montana mountain stream is an experience that captures the essence of backcountry fly fishing. Despite their common name, brook trout are not true trout at all; they are a species of char (genus Salvelinus), more closely related to lake trout and Arctic char than to rainbows or browns. Native to eastern North America from Georgia to Hudson Bay, brook trout were among the first salmonids introduced to Montana's waters in the late 1800s and have since established self-sustaining populations in cold, high-elevation streams and lakes throughout the state. In Montana, brook trout thrive best in small, cold headwater streams and high mountain lakes where competition from larger trout species is minimal. In these environments, they are often the dominant, or only, salmonid present. The trade-off is size: Montana stream-dwelling brook trout typically range from 6 to 10 inches, with fish over 12 inches considered noteworthy in most waters. What they lack in size, however, they more than make up for in beauty and willingness to eat a fly. Brookies are aggressive feeders that will strike attractor dry flies, nymphs, and small streamers with enthusiasm, making them an ideal species for beginning fly anglers and a delightful quarry for anyone who appreciates small-stream fishing. Brook trout do present a conservation paradox in Montana. While they are a beloved and beautiful gamefish, they are non-native and can negatively impact native species, particularly Yellowstone and westslope cutthroat trout. In headwater streams, brook trout often outcompete cutthroats for food and spawning habitat due to their higher reproductive rate and earlier maturation. As a result, Montana FWP has implemented brook trout removal projects on some streams to restore native cutthroat populations. In many waters, liberal harvest limits for brook trout are encouraged to reduce their numbers and benefit native fish. Anglers can enjoy excellent brook trout fishing while actively helping conservation by keeping a few for the pan.

The landlocked Atlantic salmon is one of New England's most prized gamefish, a freshwater-resident form of the Atlantic salmon that spends its entire life in lakes and rivers rather than migrating to the ocean. Found primarily in the lakes and rivers of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York, landlocked salmon are genetically identical to their sea-run counterparts but have adapted to a completely freshwater life cycle, using large, cold lakes as their ocean substitute and tributary rivers as spawning habitat. Landlocked salmon are the signature gamefish of Maine's sporting camp tradition, where generations of anglers have gathered at remote wilderness lodges to fish for salmon in the Rangeley Lakes, Moosehead Lake, Sebago Lake, and the rivers that connect them. The fish combine the acrobatic fighting ability of their anadromous relatives with the accessibility of a freshwater species, leaping repeatedly when hooked and running with the kind of power and endurance that makes them one of the most exciting fish available on a fly rod in the northeastern United States. In rivers, landlocked salmon behave much like large resident trout, holding in classic lies and feeding on aquatic insects during hatches. They are particularly responsive to caddis and mayfly emergers, and the sight of a 3-pound landlocked salmon rising to a dry fly in a New England river is one of the defining experiences of northeastern fly fishing. In lakes, salmon are targeted with streamers that imitate smelt, their primary forage fish, trolled or cast from boats during the spring and fall when salmon cruise near the surface in cold-water conditions.

The lake trout is the largest member of the char family and the signature deep-water gamefish of northern New England's coldest, cleanest glacial lakes. A native coldwater char of the northern tier of North America, the lake trout reaches the southern edge of its natural range in the deep, oligotrophic lakes carved by Pleistocene glaciers across northern New England, including Vermont's Lake Champlain and the remote glacial lakes of the Northeast Kingdom. Unlike the stream-dwelling brook trout to which it is related, the lake trout is a true creature of the depths, spending most of the year in the cold, dark, well-oxygenated water far below the surface. Lake trout are long-lived, slow-growing fish that can survive for decades in the frigid depths of their home lakes. Average fish run 18 to 24 inches, but trophy specimens exceeding 30 inches and 15 pounds are taken each season from the best Vermont waters, and the state record approaches 35 pounds. Their size and strength, combined with the challenge of reaching them in deep water, make lake trout a prized quarry for anglers willing to adapt their tactics to the fish's coldwater lifestyle. For fly anglers, the lake trout presents a unique seasonal opportunity. Through most of the year these fish hold too deep for practical fly fishing, but during the narrow windows of ice-out in spring and the fall turnover, lake trout move into the shallows to feed and spawn, bringing them within reach of a well-presented streamer. Casting large baitfish patterns near rocky shorelines and drop-offs during these periods can produce the fish of a lifetime, connecting the angler to the deep glacial history of Vermont's finest coldwater lakes.
