Lake Winnipesaukee

Lake Winnipesaukee is New Hampshire's largest lake and the flagship of the state's Large-Lake Fisheries Program, 44,422 acres of cold, island-studded water managed for landlocked salmon and lake trout. Ice-out smelt streamers and June smallmouth over the rocky shoals make it a two-act fly fishing destination.

Overview

Lake Winnipesaukee is the inland sea of central New Hampshire: 44,422 acres sprawled across Belknap and Carroll counties, broken by hundreds of islands, and reaching 180 feet in its deepest holes. For all that size, the lake averages only 43 feet deep, and that number is the most useful thing a fly angler can carry onto the water. Winnipesaukee is not one deep trench but a mosaic of broad shallow bays, rocky shoals, narrow island channels, and a handful of genuinely deep basins. The result is an oligotrophic lake that runs cold and warm at once, holding coldwater and warmwater gamefish within a few hundred yards of each other.

New Hampshire Fish and Game manages Winnipesaukee as the cornerstone of its Large-Lake Fisheries Program, the statewide effort built around landlocked Atlantic salmon. The lake is stocked annually with salmon and rainbow trout, and it gives back more than it receives: brood salmon are trapped here each fall to supply the state's egg-taking program, an annual November event known locally as Salmon Sunday at Pope Dam. Lake trout and lake whitefish reproduce naturally in the deep basins, and biologists monitor the rainbow smelt population that feeds all of them. Smallmouth and largemouth bass, chain pickerel, white perch, black crappie, rock bass, round whitefish, burbot, and brown bullhead round out one of the most diverse gamefish communities in New England.

The fly season opens at ice-out. From late April into May, salmon, rainbows, and lake trout push into the upper water column to hunt smelt, and the whole lake becomes reachable with a sinking line. Tributary mouths, windward shorelines, and the channels between islands concentrate the bait, and a Grey Ghost or black-and-white smelt pattern stripped fast through that water competes with anything the trolling fleet is pulling. That four-to-six week window is what makes Winnipesaukee a genuine fly destination rather than simply a big lake other people fish.

By late June the coldwater fish have dropped below the thermocline and out of practical fly range, but the lake hands over a second fishery in exchange. Smallmouth bass move onto the rocky shoals, boulder fields, and island edges in numbers, and Winnipesaukee's smallmouth fishing is excellent and almost entirely ignored by fly anglers — poppers at first and last light, crayfish-toned buggers and dragonfly nymphs through the middle of the day. Summer also brings chironomid and Callibaetis activity in the quieter bays, damsel migrations along the weed edges, and dense midge clusters on flat evenings.

Fall reverses the spring. As surface temperatures slide through September and October, salmon and lakers climb back into range and stage near tributary mouths ahead of spawning, and streamer fishing improves right up until the weather makes boating miserable. Winnipesaukee is big, busy, and can be intimidating on a chart, but the fly fishing concentrates in human-scale places. Learn two bays, a set of shoals, and one tributary mouth, and the largest lake in New Hampshire fishes a great deal smaller than it looks.

Water Characteristics

Winnipesaukee is a large, cold, oligotrophic natural lake with a mixed cold-and-warmwater fishery. Its 180-foot maximum depth sits in a few discrete basins; the 43-foot average reflects the enormous amount of intermediate and shallow water in the bays, coves, and island channels that make up most of the surface area. The NHFG bathymetry chart is essential reading here — it shows how abruptly the shoals rise off deep water, and those transitions are where fish of every species set up. Look for the tight contour bands around islands and mid-lake humps: those are the smallmouth shoals in summer and the salmon travel lanes at ice-out.

Water clarity is good, typical of an oligotrophic New England lake, and the lake stratifies strongly through summer with a well-defined thermocline that pushes salmon and lake trout down out of casting range from roughly late June into August. The shallow bays warm considerably and grow weedbeds that hold damselflies, dragonflies, leeches, and baitfish, supporting the bass, pickerel, and panfish side of the fishery.

Rainbow smelt are the forage base that drives everything on the coldwater side, and Fish and Game monitors the smelt population as part of large-lake management. Smelt behavior dictates salmon and laker behavior: where the bait is at ice-out, the gamefish are. Insect life follows the standard northern stillwater pattern — chironomids from ice-out through fall, Callibaetis in the coves, damsels in June and July, and heavy evening midge activity on calm water.

Seasonal Fishing Guide

Spring

Ice-out from late April into May is the premier fly window. Rainbow smelt spawn along tributary mouths and gravel shorelines, and landlocked salmon, rainbows, and shallow lake trout follow them up. Cast or slow-troll Grey Ghosts and other smelt streamers on intermediate to type-3 lines along windward shores, inlet mouths, and the channels between islands, working the top ten to fifteen feet. Overcast, breezy, cold days outfish bright calm ones on this clear water.

Summer

Salmon and lake trout drop below the thermocline by late June and become a troller's fish. The fly game shifts to smallmouth: poppers at dawn and dusk over rocky shoals and island edges, crayfish-toned buggers and dragonfly nymphs in six to fifteen feet through the day. In the quiet bays, anchor and fish chironomid pupae under an indicator over ten to twenty-five feet at first light, with Callibaetis dries on warm afternoons and damsel nymphs along the weed edges in June and July. Be off the main broads before the recreational traffic builds.

Fall

September cooling pulls salmon and lake trout back up in the water column and toward tributary mouths ahead of the November brood run. Streamer fishing improves steadily as surface temperatures fall, and the summer crowds vanish. Smallmouth feed hard on baitfish over the shoals through September before sliding deep. Expect the best action on raw, windy days.

Winter

Ice anglers jig the deep basins for lake trout and work the bays for panfish through the hardwater season. Seasons and limits for lake trout and salmon on designated lakes are specific, so check the current Digest, and verify safe ice locally — conditions vary widely between sheltered bays and the big open reaches, and current areas stay dangerous all winter.

Access & Boats

Public access is unusually good for a lake this size, with numerous state and municipal ramps and landings distributed all the way around the shoreline; Union Wharf, Harilla Landing, Carry Beach, and Back Bay are among the public sites shown on the NHFG map. Because the lake is so large, pick an access based on the water you intend to fish rather than convenience — running from one end to the other burns a morning. A boat is close to essential for covering offshore shoals and island structure, but the ice-out shoreline fishery is legitimately walkable at tributary mouths, town landings, and public shorelines. Kayaks, canoes, and float tubes work well in the protected bays and coves but should stay out of the open broads, where wind builds a punishing chop across miles of fetch and summer boat traffic is heavy.

Ice Fishing

Winnipesaukee has a long and heavily followed ice fishing tradition, with anglers jigging the deep basins for lake trout and working the bays for panfish through the winter. Treat ice conditions with real caution on water this large: thickness varies widely between sheltered bays and the open reaches, and current areas and pressure ridges stay hazardous all season.

Fishing Pressure & Local Tips

Heavy overall, light on the fly side. Winnipesaukee is New Hampshire's busiest lake, with substantial trolling effort for salmon and lake trout from ice-out onward and intense recreational boating from late June through Labor Day. Fly-specific pressure is minimal: the trolling fleet ignores the shallow bays and shoal edges where a fly rod shines, and early mornings before the wakes build feel surprisingly private. Ice-out weekdays and the September-October cooldown are the quiet windows. Smallmouth see attention from conventional bass anglers, but the sheer miles of rocky shoreline dilute it.

Local Knowledge

Time the ice-out smelt run and fish the wind. In late April and early May, spawning smelt stack against tributary mouths and windward gravel shorelines and the salmon are right behind them. Cast or slow-troll Grey Ghosts and black-and-white smelt patterns on intermediate or sink-tip lines in the top ten feet, and favor gray, choppy days — flat calm and bright sun are the toughest conditions on this clear water. A fly moving fast draws salmon; if fish follow without eating, speed up rather than slow down.

When the salmonids slide deep in June, change games entirely. Find rocky shoals and boulder fields in six to fifteen feet of water — the depth chart is full of them — and fish poppers at dawn and dusk with crayfish-toned Woolly Buggers and dragonfly nymphs through the day. Winnipesaukee smallmouth are abundant, aggressive, and almost never shown a fly.

Respect the scale. Wind has miles of fetch here, and afternoon southwesterlies can turn a pleasant morning into whitecaps quickly; plan crossings early and keep small craft in the lee of islands and points. Note also that boat and horsepower restrictions apply in various coves and channels — read the posted signage and the depth chart's access notes before running unfamiliar water. Finally, learn a small piece of the lake well. Anglers who bounce around all season rarely build a pattern; anglers who fish one bay, one shoal complex, and one tributary mouth across all four seasons figure the place out.

The landlocked Atlantic salmon is one of New England's most prized gamefish, a freshwater-resident form of the Atlantic salmon that spends its entire life in lakes and rivers rather than migrating to the ocean. Found primarily in the lakes and rivers of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York, landlocked salmon are genetically identical to their sea-run counterparts but have adapted to a completely freshwater life cycle, using large, cold lakes as their ocean substitute and tributary rivers as spawning habitat. Landlocked salmon are the signature gamefish of Maine's sporting camp tradition, where generations of anglers have gathered at remote wilderness lodges to fish for salmon in the Rangeley Lakes, Moosehead Lake, Sebago Lake, and the rivers that connect them. The fish combine the acrobatic fighting ability of their anadromous relatives with the accessibility of a freshwater species, leaping repeatedly when hooked and running with the kind of power and endurance that makes them one of the most exciting fish available on a fly rod in the northeastern United States. In rivers, landlocked salmon behave much like large resident trout, holding in classic lies and feeding on aquatic insects during hatches. They are particularly responsive to caddis and mayfly emergers, and the sight of a 3-pound landlocked salmon rising to a dry fly in a New England river is one of the defining experiences of northeastern fly fishing. In lakes, salmon are targeted with streamers that imitate smelt, their primary forage fish, trolled or cast from boats during the spring and fall when salmon cruise near the surface in cold-water conditions.

The lake trout is the largest member of the char family and the signature deep-water gamefish of northern New England's coldest, cleanest glacial lakes. A native coldwater char of the northern tier of North America, the lake trout reaches the southern edge of its natural range in the deep, oligotrophic lakes carved by Pleistocene glaciers across northern New England, including Vermont's Lake Champlain and the remote glacial lakes of the Northeast Kingdom. Unlike the stream-dwelling brook trout to which it is related, the lake trout is a true creature of the depths, spending most of the year in the cold, dark, well-oxygenated water far below the surface. Lake trout are long-lived, slow-growing fish that can survive for decades in the frigid depths of their home lakes. Average fish run 18 to 24 inches, but trophy specimens exceeding 30 inches and 15 pounds are taken each season from the best Vermont waters, and the state record approaches 35 pounds. Their size and strength, combined with the challenge of reaching them in deep water, make lake trout a prized quarry for anglers willing to adapt their tactics to the fish's coldwater lifestyle. For fly anglers, the lake trout presents a unique seasonal opportunity. Through most of the year these fish hold too deep for practical fly fishing, but during the narrow windows of ice-out in spring and the fall turnover, lake trout move into the shallows to feed and spawn, bringing them within reach of a well-presented streamer. Casting large baitfish patterns near rocky shorelines and drop-offs during these periods can produce the fish of a lifetime, connecting the angler to the deep glacial history of Vermont's finest coldwater lakes.

The rainbow trout is Montana's most widespread and popular gamefish, celebrated for its explosive surface strikes, aerial acrobatics, and willingness to take a well-presented dry fly. Native to Pacific Coast drainages from Alaska to Mexico, rainbows were first introduced to Montana's waters in the late 1800s and have since established thriving populations in nearly every major river system in the state. On legendary waters like the Madison, Missouri, and Bighorn, wild rainbow trout grow fat on prolific insect hatches and provide some of the finest dry-fly fishing in North America. Rainbow trout in Montana display remarkable variation depending on their home water. Fish in nutrient-rich tailwaters like the Missouri River below Holter Dam can exceed 20 inches with regularity, their deep bodies and broad tails reflecting the abundant food supply. Freestone river rainbows, such as those in the upper Madison and Gallatin, tend to be leaner and more athletic, shaped by faster currents and colder water temperatures. In many Montana rivers, rainbows spawn in the spring from March through June, and anglers should be mindful of spawning redds during this period to protect future generations of fish. Rainbows are arguably the most versatile trout species for fly anglers. They respond well to dry flies during hatches, aggressively chase streamers, and feed heavily on nymphs subsurface throughout the year. Their fighting ability is legendary: a hooked rainbow will often launch itself completely out of the water multiple times during a battle. Montana's catch-and-release regulations on many blue-ribbon streams have produced exceptional rainbow trout fisheries with high densities of large, healthy fish that continue to draw anglers from around the world.

The smallmouth bass is one of the most popular and widely distributed gamefish in North America and one of the finest freshwater species available to fly anglers. Found in clear, cool rivers and lakes from the Great Lakes to the Southern Appalachians, smallmouth bass combine aggressive feeding behavior, remarkable fighting ability, and a preference for the kinds of rocky, current-rich habitats that are ideally suited to fly fishing. Pound for pound, the smallmouth bass is widely considered the hardest-fighting freshwater fish in North America, earning it the nickname 'the bronze bomber' for its explosive takes and powerful, acrobatic battles on the end of a line. While smallmouth bass are not a traditional trout-stream species, they have become increasingly important to fly anglers as warm-water fly fishing has grown in popularity. Rivers like the French Broad in North Carolina, the Susquehanna and Delaware in Pennsylvania, and the St. Lawrence in New York support world-class smallmouth fisheries that attract dedicated fly anglers. In many regions, smallmouth bass inhabit the lower reaches of the same river systems that hold trout in their upper reaches, providing fly anglers with a warm-water counterpart to their cold-water fishing. Smallmouth bass are particularly appealing to fly anglers because they readily take surface flies. On warm summer evenings, smallmouth will crush poppers, sliders, and large dry flies with explosive strikes that rival any trout rise. Their willingness to feed on the surface, combined with their strength and acrobatic leaping ability, makes smallmouth bass on a fly rod one of the most thrilling freshwater fly fishing experiences available.

Rainbow Smelt (spawning run): The engine of the entire coldwater fishery and the event of the fly year. Smelt push to tributary mouths and gravel shorelines at ice-out and salmon, rainbows, and lake trout follow them into fly range. Grey Ghosts and other 3-4 inch smelt streamers on intermediate lines along windward shores.

Chironomids (midges): The most consistent insect food in the lake. Anchor over ten to twenty-five feet in a sheltered bay at first light and hang pupa patterns under an indicator a foot or two off bottom, before boat traffic builds.

Callibaetis Mayflies: Speckled duns over the weedy shallows and quiet coves bring cruising rainbows to the surface. Parachute Adams and Sparkle Duns in 14-16; cast to individual risers rather than blind-fishing water this big.

Damselflies: Nymph migrations toward shoreline vegetation in early summer draw trout and cruising smallmouth alike. Olive damsel nymphs on a floating or clear intermediate line, slow hand-twist retrieve just above the weed tops.

Dragonflies: Big nymphs crawling the rocky shoals and bay margins are prime smallmouth forage and a year-round food item rather than a hatch. Strip a large brown or olive nymph in short pulls with pauses through boulder fields in six to fifteen feet.

Leeches and general baitfish: Leeches, crayfish, and small baitfish account for a large share of what bass and holdover trout eat here. Woolly Buggers in olive and black along drop-offs, weed edges, and shoal-to-deep transitions cover all three.

Evening midge clusters: On flat calm summer evenings, clustering midges bring cruising fish up in the coves. A Griffith's Gnat in 16-20 on a long fine leader is often the only thing that moves a fish when the surface goes glassy.
