Lake Francis is the 1,934-acre Murphy Dam impoundment on the upper Connecticut River in Pittsburg, the one big water in the Connecticut Lakes chain that holds rainbows and browns alongside landlocked salmon and lake trout. Overview
Lake Francis lies at the bottom of the Connecticut Lakes chain in Pittsburg, deep in New Hampshire's Great North Woods, where the upper Connecticut River is held back by Murphy Dam. Completed in 1940, the dam backed the river into a 1,934-acre reservoir at 1,379 feet of elevation, a long coldwater basin ringed by spruce and hardwood in the emptiest corner of the state. It is classified as oligotrophic and as a coldwater fishery by New Hampshire Fish and Game, and its water stays cold and clear deep into the summer.
What makes Francis different from its upstream neighbors is the breadth of the fishery. First and Second Connecticut Lakes are essentially salmon-and-laker water; Francis is the only big water in the Pittsburg chain that adds stocked rainbow trout and brown trout to landlocked Atlantic salmon and lake trout. Rainbow smelt supply the forage, burbot and chain pickerel round out the fish community, and the reservoir's mix means a fly angler working a shoreline in May might touch three different salmonids in an afternoon without changing patterns.
The fly calendar here is bracketed by cold weather. At nearly 1,400 feet in the far north of the state, Francis clears of ice late, and the weeks immediately after that are the best of the season. Smelt move toward gravel and toward moving water to spawn, and salmon, rainbows, browns, and cruising lake trout follow them into the top of the water column. The two highest-percentage areas are the Connecticut River inflow at Green Point, where the river from First Connecticut Lake enters the reservoir, and the deeper water near Murphy Dam itself. This is streamer fishing in the honest New England tradition: a sinking line, a long smelt pattern, and a fast strip pulled through forty-degree water.
Once the reservoir stratifies in midsummer, the lake trout and most of the salmon drop below practical fly range and the fishing shifts to margins and edges. Chironomid emergences over the shallower shelves at dawn, damselfly migrations along weedy shoreline in June and early July, Callibaetis in the sheltered coves, and leech and bugger work on sinking lines along the drop-offs carry an angler through the warm weeks. Rainbows and browns stay reachable near cold inflowing water and shaded shoreline longer than the salmon do.
Autumn is the second season. As surface temperatures fall through September and October, fish come back up and push toward the inflow and shoreline structure, and the streamer fishing rebuilds toward ice-out quality with far fewer boats on the water. It is worth saying plainly that in Pittsburg the connecting Connecticut River — the fly-fishing-only water running from the First Connecticut Lake dam down to the posted signs on Lake Francis — is the more famous fly destination, and many anglers treat the lake as the base rather than the objective. That is exactly why the lake rewards attention: Lake Francis State Park sits on the shore with camping and a good ramp, the reservoir fishes hard at ice-out and again in fall, and a fly rod on this water rarely has company.

Water Characteristics
Lake Francis is a deep, cold, oligotrophic impoundment: 1,934 surface acres with a maximum depth of 82 feet and an average depth of 40 feet. That ratio is the important number. A mean depth half the maximum means this is not a shallow flat with one deep hole but a broadly deep basin — the drowned valley of the upper Connecticut — with substantial water in the 30-to-60-foot range across much of its length. The bathymetric map published by New Hampshire Fish and Game shows the contours tracking the old river channel, deepening toward the Murphy Dam end and shoaling up toward the Connecticut River inflow at the head of the lake.
The reservoir stratifies through the summer, with a thermocline separating warm surface water from the cold, oxygenated depths where lake trout and salmon hold. Water clarity is good, typical of an oligotrophic northern basin, and that clarity rewards long leaders and low-light fishing on bright calm days. Weed growth is limited compared with a productive lowland pond, concentrated on the shallower shelves and in protected coves, and those pockets hold the damselflies, dragonflies, and the bulk of the chironomid activity.
As on any impoundment, water levels move with dam operation, and the shoreline you fished in May may sit several feet differently in September; read the bank each trip rather than trusting last year's memory. Seasonal Fishing Guide
Spring
Ice-out is the event of the year on Francis, and at nearly 1,400 feet in Pittsburg it comes late. For several weeks after the ice leaves, salmon, rainbows, browns, and cruising lake trout chase spawning smelt in the top ten to fifteen feet. Cast or slow-troll smelt streamers on intermediate and sinking lines at the Connecticut River inflow near Green Point, along gravel shoreline, and out from Murphy Dam. Gray, breezy, cold days beat bluebird calm.
Summer
Once the reservoir stratifies, lake trout and most salmon drop below fly range. Shift to dawn and dusk: chironomid pupae under an indicator over the 15-to-35-foot shelves, damselfly nymphs along weed edges in June and early July, Callibaetis in sheltered coves, and leeches and Woolly Buggers stripped along the drop-offs on full-sink lines. Rainbows and browns hold near cold inflowing water longer than the salmon do.
Fall
September and October rebuild the fishery. As surface temperatures fall, fish return to the upper water column and push toward the inflow and shoreline structure. Streamer fishing improves steadily and can rival ice-out, with far fewer boats around. Dress for hard North Country weather; the best fall days are usually the least comfortable ones.
Winter
Ice fishing runs roughly January through March, with jigging and traps over the deeper water toward the dam and along the old channel edges for lake trout, salmon, and stocked trout. Confirm winter season dates and limits in the Digest and check ice thickness locally, particularly near the inflow and the dam where moving water keeps ice unreliable.
Access & Boats
The primary access is the boat ramp at Lake Francis State Park, which also offers campsites and makes an excellent base for fishing both the reservoir and the Connecticut River sections above and below it. A secondary, more limited launch is available off Route 3. The reservoir is a boat and troll fishery for most anglers, but shoreline casting is genuinely productive at the Connecticut River inflow near Green Point and around the water near Murphy Dam, especially at ice-out when fish are shallow. Canoes, kayaks, and float tubes work well in sheltered water on calm mornings, but Francis is a large northern lake with a long fetch and open exposure, and small craft should watch the wind and stay near shore.
Ice Fishing
Lake Francis is a well-established winter fishery, with ice fishing generally running January through March. Anglers set traps and jig for lake trout, salmon, and stocked trout over the deeper water toward the dam end and along the old channel edges. The far-north location means ice usually forms early and lasts late compared with southern New Hampshire waters, but conditions still vary near the inflow and near the dam where current and water-level changes can thin the ice. Fishing Pressure & Local Tips
Moderate overall and light for fly anglers specifically. Pittsburg draws a steady stream of visiting anglers, but the great majority of them are on the Connecticut River — the fly-fishing-only water between the lakes is the region's headline attraction — or trolling the bigger Connecticut Lakes for salmon and lakers. Boat traffic on Francis concentrates at ice-out and during the summer camping season at the state park, and the winter ice fishery has its own dedicated following. A fly angler working the inflow at first light in May, or casting streamers along the shoreline in October, will often have the water essentially to themselves.
Local Knowledge
Fish the moving water first. The Connecticut River inflow at the Green Point end is the highest-percentage area on the reservoir because it concentrates current, temperature contrast, and spawning smelt in one place. Work the seam where the river's push fades into still water, and cover it from the edges rather than motoring through it. The water near Murphy Dam is the second stop, holding deeper, colder water within reach of a sinking line earlier and later in the season than the middle of the lake.
Match the smelt, and move the fly. Three-to-five-inch smelt imitations such as the Grey Ghost are the ice-out standard, and salmon in particular respond to a fly retrieved with purpose. If fish follow without committing, strip faster rather than slower. Carry an intermediate line for the top ten feet of the water column and a type 3 to type 6 full-sink for working the drop-offs where the old river channel edges meet the shelves.
Use the reservoir and the river together. Because Francis sits at the bottom of the chain with the fly-only Connecticut River running into it, the smart trip plan is to fish the lake at dawn and dusk when fish are shallow and shift to the river through the bright middle of the day. Camping at the state park puts both within a few minutes, and it lets you be on the water at the exact hours that matter on a clear northern lake.

Rainbow Trout
The rainbow trout is Montana's most widespread and popular gamefish, celebrated for its explosive surface strikes, aerial acrobatics, and willingness to take a well-presented dry fly. Native to Pacific Coast drainages from Alaska to Mexico, rainbows were first introduced to Montana's waters in the late 1800s and have since established thriving populations in nearly every major river system in the state. On legendary waters like the Madison, Missouri, and Bighorn, wild rainbow trout grow fat on prolific insect hatches and provide some of the finest dry-fly fishing in North America. Rainbow trout in Montana display remarkable variation depending on their home water. Fish in nutrient-rich tailwaters like the Missouri River below Holter Dam can exceed 20 inches with regularity, their deep bodies and broad tails reflecting the abundant food supply. Freestone river rainbows, such as those in the upper Madison and Gallatin, tend to be leaner and more athletic, shaped by faster currents and colder water temperatures. Rainbows are arguably the most versatile trout species for fly anglers. Brown Trout
The brown trout is the most cunning and elusive trout species swimming in Montana's rivers, and it rewards patient, skilled anglers with some of the state's most memorable catches. Originally native to Europe and western Asia, brown trout were first introduced to North American waters in 1883 and arrived in Montana shortly thereafter. They have since established robust, self-sustaining populations in virtually every major trout stream in the state, from the legendary spring creeks of the Paradise Valley to the sweeping runs of the lower Madison and the deep pools of the Bighorn. Brown trout grow larger than any other trout species in Montana, and fish exceeding 24 inches are caught with regularity on premium waters. The lower Madison River, the Missouri River below Holter Dam, and the Bighorn River are particularly renowned for producing trophy-class browns. Landlocked Atlantic Salmon
The landlocked Atlantic salmon is one of New England's most prized gamefish, a freshwater-resident form of the Atlantic salmon that spends its entire life in lakes and rivers rather than migrating to the ocean. Found primarily in the lakes and rivers of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York, landlocked salmon are genetically identical to their sea-run counterparts but have adapted to a completely freshwater life cycle, using large, cold lakes as their ocean substitute and tributary rivers as spawning habitat. Lake Trout
The lake trout is the largest member of the char family and the signature deep-water gamefish of northern New England's coldest, cleanest glacial lakes. A native coldwater char of the northern tier of North America, the lake trout reaches the southern edge of its natural range in the deep, oligotrophic lakes carved by Pleistocene glaciers across northern New England, including Vermont's Lake Champlain and the remote glacial lakes of the Northeast Kingdom. Unlike the stream-dwelling brook trout to which it is related, the lake trout is a true creature of the depths, spending most of the year in the cold, dark, well-oxygenated water far below the surface. Damselflies: Nymph migrations toward shoreline weed and structure in June and early July draw rainbows and browns tight to the edges. Fish a damsel nymph on a floating or clear intermediate line with a slow hand-twist retrieve just above the weed tops.
Dragonflies: Big dragonfly nymphs prowl the weedy shelves and are a large, year-round meal on this lake. A weighted dragon nymph crawled along the bottom on the drop-off edges is a reliable summer searching pattern when nothing is showing.
